The best refurbished laptops for students right now
4 December 2025

Three machines under $500 that will comfortably survive a full degree — and one to avoid.
What actually matters for a student laptop
Not the processor generation. What matters is an SSD, at least 8GB of RAM, a screen you can look at for six hours, and a battery that survives a lecture block. Business-class machines hit all four at prices consumer laptops cannot match second-hand.
Three we recommend
- Lenovo ThinkPad T490 — best keyboard, light enough to carry daily, plenty of ports
- Lenovo X1 Carbon — just over a kilogram, the pick if you commute far
- HP ProBook 440 — quietest of the three and the easiest to service later
One to avoid
Anything still running a mechanical hard drive, regardless of how good the processor sounds. The drive will be the bottleneck and the machine will feel slow from day one.
